Nice. I just laughed so hard I scared my son... :x

And for the record, nothing can kill Keith Richards. That's part of his deal with Satan...

 Muah-ha-ha-ha!

Seesh, last time I let you know the details of any of my deals. They're meant to be kept confidential, not blabbed about to whoever you feel like

Peace,

I have a request for your new game site (sorry if its been requested before)...............

A lot of arguments happen in the forums over who's the best player in different categories. It's acknowleged that the current rating system is flawed and prone to abuse.

How about maintaining and displaying statistics about players in several different ways..... examples:

- # games played in each of 2-player, 3-player, ...., 8-player, 8+-player games
- win ratio and average finish-placing in each of the above categories
- average rating of opponents in each of the above categories

A player statistics page that lists the "top-10" in each of the above categories.

If you're using a relational database to store basic information about each game, then it would be fairly simple to calculate these stats.

Just my 2 cents worth........

Peacemaker- 05-20-2005

Thanks Cugel, your 2 cents is worth a lot.

My site uses a version of my own scoring and ranking system used during my Olympic Games Tournament. It will track short term and life time ratings and rank for each game size and will be further broken down into team-based games and individual skill games.

Win ratio is inlcuded and average finish-placing is inherent in the player rating. A mega player statistics section will list all sorts of good stuff, including a top-10 list in each category.

I have designed the systems to minimize the desire and ability of players to manipulate their ratings and thus their rank. This is good because as membership grows I'd like to award quarterly or monthly prizes to top players, and host a quarterly and annual masters tournament series comprised of the monthly leaders, picking up on cdspro's idea from GC. The winner of that series will be declared America's Next Top Model.

Keep the ideas coming folks. There's always room for more. :)

when ever you lose a game it should show a nuclear bomb explosion at the beginning of the next turn

seaellem- 05-20-2005

another idea that may appeal to some:

since most history of the game is recorded in the database, why not make the map of the game available when looking back through? i often wonder with some of the transfers that were done where armies came from or where they had been. it's a really small detail, but it would be nice.

Peacemaker- 05-20-2005

Sea, do you mean the map at the end of the game or making the map viewable as it was on any given turn?

As it stands, I had planned to display the end of game map and forum details for at least some period of time, in order to satisfy those who wish to see their victory.

I'm still considering retention times for the map and forum details. As an example of what needs to be considered, a 42 area Risk board requires 42 rows in a table in order to provide map information. There is additional information needed as well but I won't get into the details here. For any given game with let's say a duration of 10 rounds, that is 420 rows of information. GC has roughly 200 games being completed per day on average so now we have 84,000 per day. See how that adds up quickly. If only preserving the last round info for map display, then that is still 8,400 rows per day or over 3 million rows per year. That's a lot to maintain, even in archive tables it is the same space requirement (actually more for simly having an additional table(s)).

Add the following considerations: I expect my site to be much busier than GC, I have 10 more games on my site which require the similar table structures, and because I have added Turn Rollback as a feature, I must maintain most of the turn information while the game is being played.

i liked the realtime games that made a brief appearance

Peacemaker- 05-20-2005

What's a realtime game? Did I miss another of Bryan's phantom features?

If you implement it that way yes it will take up too much space. There are more efficient ways to achieve the same result, drastically more efficient. I was considering supporting this feature, as well as adding historical graphs showing eash players army bonus, total armies lost, gained, and so on. One of the PC Risk games I have has that and I thought it was neat. I will be adding that to my game engine.

Peace, realtime games were not just a fantasy of Bryan's. They did appear briefly where as soon as you hit end turn your move happend right away. So whomever could click their turns the fasted would win. Real time based, not turn based. Thing was, Bryan turned it on for ALL current games by mistake. I noticed this as I was playing some games with my alt, Ayuh. I told him, messaged him like a dozen times non stop until he replied since while it was on ANYONE currently logged onto global combat could theoretically instantly win all of the games. He did reply, and quickly turned it off and gave me a free enlistment. Though for the alt not my main!

Anyway, as part of the paid subscription I was going to offer real time games, perhaps in the form of a much richer client and user experience via a downloaded application. The game engine I have built will simultaneously support both web based and networked application games.

Oh and btw, Peace's "site" is not the only one out there nearing completion. After we had a group together to work on it and Peace came in and said "psst" everyone abandoned me so I did it myself. Slow going, perhaps I will get laid off due to more outsourcing and I can finish it in a week or two. Otherwise who knows when it will get done, or if I bother to put it live.

That's a nice idea Drahlek. A small little map screen would be neat. I've also thought that a sort of animation, showing the evolution of the map would be cool -- stepping through the turns, watching the development of the various armies, the movements of the fronts, etc. In some games it would be very cool, as a player gives up his spot in SA, and takes over NA. I'm psyched that you are both working on this; I can't wait to see the results.

Red Dwarf- 05-21-2005

it does seem a shame that there are two sites that both sound like they are taking a lot of work under construction that in essence will be competitors but I suppose that can only be healthy and will lead to better end products and future development

cugel the clever- 05-21-2005

I'm with joesmith. It would be cool to be able to see an animation of the game in which, after the game, you could play a little movie that showed the ebb and flow of colours across the world. I guess there's no real game-benefit to such a feature, but it sure would look cool. It wouldn't take much space to store enough information for the animation.... and it could be timed to expire after a period of time (week, month, etc).

Trib- 05-21-2005

awesome idea!

a monkey- 05-21-2005

oh wow let him finish the basics first l8r improve on it
