Peacemaker- 07-22-2005

In light of the recent unfortunate news from cugel, I thought I'd take a moment to share some of the mechanisms/features I plan on using to keep sgamers fun by virtue of providing disincentives for those who make it not fun. I approached this long standing problem with the belief that the vast majority of dislikable players are not enlisted but rather play for free. Therefore I have severely limited the free account (trial) period to make it a pain for them. Second, only games wherein all players are paying members are counted in the ranking system. Ergo, playing for free gives no rank, no score, nothing. I am also considering a "can't join my games" list to automatically prevent unwanted members of any type from joining your games.

Additionally, site rules for admin and player conduct in games and forums will be clearly defined and enforced. Defying these means the boot without refund in most cases. That is a disincentive for the few who are willing to spend money on multiple accounts in order to cheat or just be buttheads. Also, only paying customers will be allowed to post in the community forums although they will be open for others to read, and non-subscribers can't post in other game forums. Thus, no spammers and unwanted commentary from the riff raff.

The next area to ameliorate possible areas of dissatisfaction includes game mechanics. I will be using multiple scoring and ranking systems (four I think) in order to give everyone a measure of skill that they can appreciate. This includes addressing the so-called playing for second issue. Additionally, members must continue playing regularly to maintain their active ranks, which will take precedent over life time ranks. And since logging in once in a while just to defeat a newbie free account player will not keep your rank active, sisif-types (no offense) won't get the easy road to staying on top. Additionally, games, even with all players being paying members, can be made as non-scored games. So you and your friends can screw around if you like and you can get to know new subscribers in a safe environment. Games can be started manually instead of automatically, which is important for short turn games where sometimes people miss the game start. Games can use an auto force option to keep games moving. For manually force type games, turn forcers names will be posted in the game log. There is nothing inherently wrong with forcing a turn. Only when it defies sincere requests and legitimate issues is it truly bad sportsmanship. Where problems still creep up, games can be paused, rolled back a number of turns, reset (new map distribution), and restarted (initial layout). The later denies people from trying to get better starting positions. Lastly, players that hold up tourneys and the like can be substituted out at any time. A number of these are admin functions of course.

En toto, I believe that the combination of mechs here will make it so spoil sportism will be very rare. You can play pickup games with trial members and quit the game without affect on score/rank. That makes it unfun for them as well and is probably the single most worthwhile enhancement over GC.

*********************************
A Monkey, as to your pricing question, the membership price is not set as yet but it will likely be substantially higher than GC, and given what will be included for the price, I believe well worth it. I will probably not set the price until after the new games have had an airing and received feedback. If they are well received, then of course that will make the site that much more desirable and priced accordingly. I'm always open to suggestions. If people ARE truly enjoying the new games but humorously pretending not too in order to influence the price, then I'll show up at your door carrying a chainsaw. ;) (That one's for Duke)

Now back to work. I'm play testing today. :)

Exeptions?

The whole multi account thing is my identity. It would be a shame to have to get rid of most of them.

And I also have no money to spend on anything but essentials

you should place a bet in game and win some :P
(this only works if you are good enough )

If Homer Simpson has been reading these descriptions, I think he'd give up his addiction to beer and donuts.

Actually, I think he'd just sit in front of the computer and play all day, eating donuts and drinking beer. But, then again, so does cd.

Peace, I though showing up outside someone's door with a chainsaw was going to be the "secret" 11th game on the site. . .

Hey... I'm a respectable businessman... I don't need to put up with this kind of nonsense...

Duke33- 07-22-2005

Eating donuts and drinking beer in front of the computer is what puts the "respectable" in that statement.

But, I must admit that is the first time that I have ever heard anyone, cd included, refer to him as a "businessman". Can you tell that he is now in his 30s?!

Pricing is not an issue. I'd gladly pay more for something that has value, as it sounds like PM's site will.

Yeah, that was a bit of a stretch I must agree... Man, yeah (don't even!), but businessman, never...

st.theone- 07-23-2005

i mean forcing the first turn ... and forcing when its clear someone is still in the game... force is not there for a weapon

a monkey- 07-23-2005

i think what would be better is an option so you can pick to show force or not cause forcing is part of the game

blakke- 07-23-2005

neat idea, if you need any help pm me :)

I wish you luck. I want to point a few things out.

The site peacemaker is making is not in beta testing yet.

It will have an initial user base of about 10-20 players. It may never get very large, I hope for the sake of all involved it does Im not being negative. I am interested in hearing about it, some ideas I like some ideas I already dont, i like lots and lots of people as opposed to a few. Ill put some opinions on the game later though when its real for me.

It will be so long between now and a new global combat.... that you shouldnt even let it enter your thoughts. If you want to play risk games seriously, you should go ahead and do it.

I feel sorry and confused to hear people are waiting for some new game to debut ,test ,program, advertise, whatever.

Having done it in the past I can tell u Im not interested in beta testing online web games ( unless theres something in it for me) Im more into a real game with 100s of players and competition.

Its a bummer to hear people waiting for some new game thats really so far off thats something else thats getting on my nerves with my recent thoughts on gc burnouts. You dont have to worry about having fun in the game and meeting new players or even advertising the forum or anything positive because some game is on the horizon.... when really there isnt. There are existing games similar

There might be....

I have the utmost confidence that PM will produce what he is describing, that there will be hundreds (or more) of players keen to play, that it won't be years away, and that it will be far superior to GC.

What is the source of information for all your pessimistic remarks, Stamar? Is there an AA sort of organisation that can help you (via 12 steps) to overcome your bouts of negativity, and Cassius Clay impressions?

Here's a challenge for you, Stamar: post a message of >25 words that does not contain "I", "me" or "my". We're keen to meet the great guy hiding under the blustering exterior.
